There are very many facts and figures banded around about smoking. A quick trawl of the Internet should be enough to provide anybody with enough information to make an informed decision about smoking.
Amongst the key highlights, if you can call them that, are things like
If you smoke you are 21 times more likely to get lung cancer than a non-smoker.
You have a 50% increase chance of developing cancer in other organs.
That 150,000 people die every year through smoking related pulmonary heart disease.
There are about 4000 chemicals present in cigarettes excluding the ones that might have got onto the tobacco like insecticides and fertilisers. A number of the chemicals are naturally present in the tobacco leaf itself and a number are added by the manufacturers.
Did you also know that when you smoke there is a drop of between 10% and 13% in the levels of oxygen entering your blood stream. Your brain becomes starved of Oxygen, so has to send messages to your heart to beat faster. That means instead of beating 100,000 times per day it has to increase by about 10%, to 110,000 times per day! That's an extra 70,000 times per week. I'll let you do the math for the whole year.
Most if not all smokers know and understand the dangers of smoking, and a great many are fully aware of all of the facts and figures regarding premature death, increased risk of stroke and heart disease and general affects on health. So armed with the compelling evidence it should be really easy to quit, after all you are saving your life!
As we mentioned earlier, having a conscious understanding of the issues is not necessarily enough to elicit a therapeutic response. In layman's terms, " I know it's dangerous, I will stop"
For cigarettes and the smoker there are a number of components. Firstly there is the nicotine addiction, which is the chemical dependency. And there is what we would refer to as the pure habit side of it. i.e. "For a number of years I have always had my first cigarette of the day with my first cup of coffee. My second is always while driving to work, etc etc"
Another part of the habit is the physical lifting of the cigarette to the lips to actually smoke. On average, for each cigarette you smoke you raise your arm to mouth 20 times. So that means for a 20 a day smoker the habit is being re-enforced 400 times a day! All this adds to the smoking habit because as far as the subconscious is concerned this is what you do and as we've said a couple of times throughout this website your subconscious does not know the difference between right and wrong and always strives to protect you. Bizarrely, this might mean at a subconscious level, actually keeping you smoking!
If you are a smoker who is trying to quit, chances are you have tried a couple of times before and the chances are you will have relied on will power, chewing gums or maybe nicotine patches. Hopefully you'll now understand that we need to attack all areas of the habit. So Hypnosis will target the nicotine addiction as well as the smoking habit itself. More importantly for most people, Hypnosis does not replace one habit with another. So there will be no increased eating or snacking, (although you will find your food more tasty). No use of gums or other smoking related substitutes like patches or false cigarettes, after one 2-hour session of hypnosis you will simply become a non-smoker!
